Medication Management

Mindset provides medication management and is qualified to practice in both primary care and psychiatry.  Our clients are diagnosed and treated as needed.  We prescribe medication and provide therapy for children, adolescents, and adults.  Some of the practice specialities include (but not limited to) ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar, Substance Abuse, Schizophrenia, and minor medical conditions such as Hypertension, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, and Thyroid conditions.  We pride ourselves on providing quality care through evidence-based practice.  This is implemented by utilizing the latest innovative techniques by prescribing safe and efficient medications and natural treatments, which include but not confined to vitamins, supplements, lifestyles modifications, and most importantly therapy.

Laboratory Services

Many psychiatric disorders require laboratory testing to rule out substance abuse, medication compliance, toxicity, or medical conditions.  Therapeutic drug monitoring for certain drugs has been well documented to improve the use of these agents for therapeutic management of the disorder and has become the standard of care in psychiatry.  The monitoring of these labs are necessary for the safety of the client.  Labs are done on a routine basis and clients are made aware of the times and rationales.  Standard routine labs will also be conducted due to the nature of some of the medications that can be prescribed.  Collection of routine labs help with secondary and tertiary prevention.  These drugs include, but are not limited to:

  • Tricylic antidepressants

  • Lithium

  • Depakote

  • Tegeretol

  • Trileptal

HIV and STD Risk and Prevention

Substance abuse affects your brain and inhibits your judgment.  The effects of either drugs or alcohol may cause you to make poor decisions that may put you at risk for transmitting HIV and other sexual transmitted diseases.  If you are an IV (intravenous) drug user, you are at an even higher risk.   There are also some individuals who are at high risk for HIV and other sexual transmitted diseases due to their current situation.  Here at Mindset we service those individuals by assessing their sexual history and whether they would  benefit from beginning PREP.  Clients will have to have labs drawn periodically for this drug and counseling is mandatory.  They will be educated about the drug and any necessary precautions needed.  They will also be tested for most other STD's as well.

MAT

Medicated-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of FDA- approved medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a “whole-patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders.  These medications relieve the withdrawal symptoms and psychological cravings that cause chemical imbalances in the body. MAT programs provide a safe and controlled level of medication to overcome the use of abused opioids.  Research has shown that when provided at the proper dose, medications used in MAT have no adverse effects on a person’s intelligence, mental capability, physical or job functioning.

MindSet is a Medication-Assisted Treatment program for clients battling substance abuse  We specialize in treating the client from a holistic modality.  For many people who are either addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, addiction can be very challenging.  Without professional health, they may remain addicted, and feel as if there is no way out.  Our program will not only help you find a way out, but will guide you to staying out through medication management and therapy.  Through our MAT program we can help you overcome your cravings and those physical symptoms of withdrawal.  We will also educate you on the effects of the drugs and focus on healing through therapy.

 Pharmacogenomic Testing

Pharmacogenomics studies the genetic makeup of patients to determine how they might respond to medications.  These tests uncover whether patients are producing enzymes to effectively break down or use medication compounds and how well their bodies will excrete them.  They also evaluate some genes which predict efficacy and/or side effects with certain medication classes.  Using these results, providers can better determine which medications may work with clients.  This will end the costly and exhausting trial-and error process for treating clients.  This can be a welcomed relief for both providers and clients alike.

Clozapine Therapy

Clozapine is an antipsychotic drug that is used to treat schizophrenia in patients whose symptoms are not controlled with standard antisychotic drugs.  Clozapine is also used in patients with recurrent suicidal behavior associated with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.  While clozapine is beneficial for some patients, there are risks associated with this drug.  Specifically, clozapine can decrease the number of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, that function in the body to fight off infections.  When neutrophils are significantly decreased, severe neutropenia may result and the body may become prone to infections.  For this reason patients taking clozapine need to have their absolute neutrophil count (ANC) monitored on a regular basis.
